Fall Wardrobe Color Palettes for Portrait Sessions

Fall in New England is like nothing else. From firepits to apple picking to football, there’s no better time (IMHO) to be outside. If you’re like many families, you may be planning your next portrait session. Along with that, you may be wondering, what will we wear? With all the vibrant foliage or dizzying array of colors of a pumpkin patch or apple orchard, it can be challenging to pick out the right outfits, or even know where to start. Down below are a few options to choose from to get you started. For family portraits, try to think less about individual outfits and making everyone match; instead, think of the family as wearing one outfit and making sure that there are complementary pieces across the whole family.

Tip: Pick one focal piece, then pull colors from that item for all the other outfits. If you are using strong colors, be sure to complement them with neutrals such as grey, tan, or brown. Below are four color palettes that are sure to play well with New England fall portrait shoots, no matter the location. Navy is the primary color in three of the four, because I personally feel that it’s the best foundational color to wear for fall portrait shoots.

Grey - Mustard - Burnt Red

Navy - Grey - Yellow

Navy - Plum - Mustard

Navy - Rust - Tan

What do you think? I’d love to know what your favorite color combos are for fall portraits. Leave a comment and share your ideas!
